Javi's Golf Mk1 ABF. A story of garage, friendship, and VW passion

Javi's Golf Mk1 ABF. A story of garage, friendship, and VW passion

Some cars begin their story far from home. Javi's MK1 started in Palma de Mallorca, hidden among internet ads, waiting for someone to see it with the right eyes. He'd been dreaming of a project like this for a long time: a clean, original car to modify to his liking, without any strange inherited parts to spoil the process. When he saw it, he didn't hesitate. He bought the ticket, crossed the Mediterranean, and returned with what would eventually become one of the most recognizable cars at our meetups.

At first glance, the MK1 looked sound. 1.3 carburetor engine, all original, decent paint job… the kind of thing that makes you think, “I got lucky.” But we all know how these cars are: you don't discover the truth until you lift the carpets, remove the fenders, or scrape off the sealant. And in this case, the truth was a collection of rust, very typical of cars that have spent their lives on islands. Nothing to scare Javi, but enough to understand that the project was going to be more serious than it seemed.

And that's how it all began. With patience, tools, nights in the garage, and that very Spanish spirit of "since it's already taken apart, let's make it perfect." What came next was a profound transformation.

Under the hood, the small 1.3-liter engine gave way to a 2.0-liter 16v ABF , an aluminum radiator, and a gearbox from a Golf Mk3 diesel – a combination that transforms this MK1 into a serious toy. Adjustable FK suspension, 280mm front brakes , a rear disc conversion using a fine mix of cross-generation parts, and 15-inch BBS RS wheels with Radinox rims complete the aesthetic package down to the last detail.

Inside, Javi took the time to create a space that blended sportiness and comfort: Recaro seats , a Cabriolet dashboard, a Golf Mk2 instrument cluster, and an interior fully upholstered in leather and Alcantara that exudes a well-executed project. Outside, the classic GTI Tornado Red paint gives it personality, finished with carbon fiber moldings and fender flares, and widened rear fenders that add an aggressive edge without sacrificing elegance.

But perhaps the most important part of Javi's MK1 story isn't what it has installed, but how it was built . Because he didn't build this car alone: the three of us did it together, like so many other things. Screws, swearing, cables that didn't fit where they should, and those garage nights where you lose track of time. That's where a car's personality is truly forged, and that of a group as well.

Driving it, Javi says, is freedom. It's the feeling of having created something with your own hands, of driving a car that very few can own, not because of money, but because of dedication. And that's evident every time he starts it.

Of all the anecdotes he's accumulated, there's one that always comes up in conversation: that trip to Potes. A spectacular trip… that ended with Javi running out of gas. Yes, we all laughed—him included—but deep down, those are the stories that make a car more than just a machine. They're the ones you remember years later.

Today, their MK1 is not just a finished project: it's part of the group's identity. And, without a doubt, one of the best examples of what VWHEELSWAP stands for: cars built with passion, as a family, and with real stories behind them.
