Nacho's Golf Mk1: when a project becomes a farewell (or not)

Nacho's Golf Mk1: when a project becomes a farewell (or not)

There are projects you spend years searching for, and others that, when they appear, you just know are the one . Nacho had been torn between two very clear ideas for some time: a Porsche 944 or a Golf Mk1. Ultimately, the Golf won out, not only for its aesthetics, but because the car we know today already existed in his mind.

The unit appeared about 550 kilometers from home. Distance wasn't a problem: when you can't go yourself, friends step up. Rafa took it upon himself to go see it and buy it, taking the first step in a story that would end up being much bigger than a simple project.

An imperfect but honest starting point

The car had undergone some cosmetic modifications in the past, but when it came into Nacho's hands, it barely retained its coilover suspension. The reality was clear: the bodywork was in rather poor condition, and the mechanics weren't up to par. It wasn't a car "ready to enjoy," but rather a base that demanded work, patience, and well-thought-out decisions.

And that's where the real project began.

Mechanics with character and balance

The heart of the car is a 2.0 16V ABF engine , complemented by exhaust manifolds, a full exhaust system, and a lightweight flywheel. All of this is paired with a short-ratio gearbox , creating a direct, efficient combination that perfectly embodies the spirit of the Mk1.

In terms of chassis and aesthetics, the package was completed with 16” BBS RS wheels , metal bumpers, fully reupholstered Recaro Mk3 seats , V-Maxx coilover suspension, and Golf Mk2 G60 brakes . The car was completely repainted, all rust was removed, and absolutely all the body rubber was replaced, paying attention to those details that make the difference between “restored” and “well done.”

A team project

Although Nacho knew exactly how he wanted the car from the start, much of the work was entrusted to experts. The engine swap was done by Javi, a close friend, at his workshop, Automecánica del Viso . The paint and upholstery were also handled by professionals, with Tafraworks taking care of the interior.

This isn't about posing as "everything homemade," but something more important: knowing how to surround yourself with the right people so that the result lives up to the idea.

Driving without filters

What Nacho loves about this Mk1 isn't the numbers or the raw power. It's the feeling of driving a car without electronic aids , where everything depends on your hands and feet. The thrust of the 2.0-liter engine, its 150 hp moving a mere 875 kg , makes every acceleration visceral, direct, and honest.

And then there's what happens outside the car: seeing how both experts and passersby turn their heads when they see it. That silent validation that the job is well done.

Enjoy it knowing that it could be the end

Like any project of this scale, there were headaches, unexpected expenses, and sleepless nights. But there are experiences that make it all worthwhile. Especially a recent trip to Potessee , over 2,250 km , which was a truly special experience.

Because, even though the car was never officially for sale, someone was insisting on buying it. And something inside Nacho told him he had to take that trip before letting it go. To experience it. To close that chapter.

By the time you read this, the Mk1 may no longer be in his hands… or maybe it is, because at the last minute he didn't dare to let it go.
That's what happens with some cars: you don't know if you build them to enjoy them or to learn that there are things that are too hard to leave behind.
